America's waste industry successfully manages 250 million tons of household and other municipal solid annually.  The average American discards 4.43 pounds of garbage everyday.  If we put all of the solid waste collected in the U.S. in a line of average garbage trucks, that line of trucks could cross the country, extending from New York City to Los Angeles more then 100 times.  Composting is the best way to treat organic waste.  Not only does it save valuable landfill space by reducing the amount we through away, but it replaces commercially produced peat products which can damage important wildlife sites.  Up to 30% of an average household's waste is organic and can be turned into compost.
